Each product has gone through a rigorous selection process. Using FDA Nutrient Content Claims, Joslin Clinic, part of an academic medical center affiliated with Harvard Medical School, selected nutrition attributes for food categories, such as "low sodium" and "excellent source protein" to ensure that items with a nutrition iQ tag are, at a base level, better-for-you.
  • High levels of sodium and saturated fat are connected with a significant number of chronic health conditions.
  • High intakes of sodium are related to high blood pressure, as well as congestive heart failure and kidney disease.
  • A high intake of saturated fat may increase the risk for heart disease and stroke.
  • Excess sugar plays a significant role in the formation of dental cavities and is a contributing role in other health issues such as obesity.
  • Sugar levels were limited in relevant categories because sugar does not provide any significant nutritional value, and contributes to "empty" calories in our daily diets.
Along with these qualifying criteria, we have used the FDA Nutrient Content Claims to call out up to two key nutrient attributes that are relevant by category and contribute to a healthy diet.
